The primary beliefs are
- I'm OK, You're OK
- Everyone has the capacity to think
- People decide their own destiny and these decisions can be changed
So what can you expect?
Transactional Analysis is a talking therapy, so the process is one of exploring what is going on for you through skilful questioning using the various models provided by Transactional Analysis. Sessions are always run in a respectful way to attain your objectives.
We often think of therapy as consisting of two stages
The first is called decontamination. This is a where together we explore where the line is between what is actually true from the messages we received in childhood. For example, a common belief is that many people hold is that they are unworthy in some way. Rationally, we can see that no one is worth more than anyone else - so the question is how this belief was learned and how can we let it go.
The second stage is deconfusion. This is when we are working directly with the early (younger) part of the personality to change some of the decisions made when young. For example, a person may have made the decision that to survive, they must always get everything right and never make any mistakes, Whenever a mistake occurs (as it must), the person feels dreadful about themselves. Or someone might have decided that they must never think of themselves as grown-up and this has prevented them from taking their full part in the world or in relationships.
Sometimes you may be invited to use an exercise to uncover hidden parts of yourself which may be holding you back.
Transactional Analysis can work with individuals, couples or in groups
Whenever I work with couples I am aware that there are three entities in the room. These are the two people and also the relationship between them. Attention must be given to all three.
Group therapy consists of working with each of the members
The power of a group is that the interactions between group members provides many ways into the patterns of the individuals within it. Some people find that working within a group helps them to uncover and resolve their own issues as the "transactional drama" unfolds.
